Message from the DirectorThe recent tragedy of the Boxing Day tsunami in the Indian Ocean reminds us of the power and uncertainty of our oceans and sea-bed systems. The force and unpredictability of these events and the levels of devastation to our neighbouring region brings into focus our need to continually expand our understanding of our oceans. Read more. Global
first for Australian ocean-bed research CSIRO's Wealth from Oceans Flagship and its partners have delivered a simulation of seabed change for the next 50 years. National expansion of this capability has the potential to save the oil and gas industry billions of dollars. Read More.
In July, the RV Southern Surveyor will embark on the first of two four-week ocean expeditions off the West Australian coast to deliver up the secrets of its unknown deep underwater region. Read more.
A scientific expedition, led by Dr Steve
Rintoul from the Wealth from Oceans Flagship and Antarctic Climate and
Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre, has found evidence that the deep
waters of the Southern Ocean are cooler and less salty than they were 10
years ago.
Two Perth based scientists are working to
bring together a team capable of developing radical technologies to extract
offshore oil and gas without the use of a traditional production platform. Read more.
Development of Australia's first ocean forecasting system is approaching a critical milestone as computer simulations for 1992-2004 are compared with an historical 12-year record of observations for the same period. Read more. |
IN THIS EDITION:
