As Director of the Food Futures Flagship, it is exciting to be leading a multi-divisional CSIRO initiative that is already demonstrating success. In a world first scientific outcome, we announced in April the production of DHA, a healthy omega-3 oil component, in the land plant, Arabidopsis. The omega-3 oils, which are important for human health, are normally only available from fish sources. Read more.

$97 Million Research Collaboration Fund Goes Live 

The Australian Government has announced the launch of the $97 million Flagship Collaboration Fund to support collaborative research between universities, the CSIRO and other publicly funded research agencies.

Australia's leading food researchers will invest new Victorian Government funding to develop the next generation of potentially revolutionary food processing technologies.

The Victorian Government announced recently a $3.5 million grant to boost the work of researchers from Food Science Australia, the University of Melbourne, Swinburne University of Technology and CSIRO Plant Industry.

Innovation Festival

During the National Innovation Festival 2005 CSIRO developed a series of presentations to profile our research achievements in areas of wine, health and automotive research. 

The three lunch presentations included Innovation in Wine in Adelaide, Innovation in Health in Sydney and Innovation in the Automotive Industry in Melbourne. Read more.


New wheat on the horizon 

image of heads of wheat The Food Futures research team in Advanced Genetics, together with its research partner Biogemma, is developing novel wheat varieties to meet the emerging health needs of the community. These wheats have a high proportion of amylose, a particular form of “resistant starch,” and a low glycaemic index (GI). Read more.
