Flagship targets big issues for automotive industry

T-Mag wheels: one of the new breed of high-integrity, lower-cost light metals parts for the automotive industry 
The automotive industry needs technology-intensive products made from aluminium and magnesium, because of their potential for weight reduction within tight cost constraints. In particular, opportunities exist for the wider use of magnesium within the industry and for light metal body structures for commodity vehicles.

Thin magnesium-sheet production process licensed

Large coils of fabrication-ready thin sheet made direct from molten magnesium
CSIRO has played the lead role in Australia’s breakthrough low-cost, thin magnesium-sheet technology, now close to being production-ready.

New markets opening up for titanium sheet 


Titanium sheet made direct from powder opens up the possibility of formed products such as pipe and tube.
New technology being developed to produce continuous titanium sheet at a reduced cost has the potential to dramatically open the market for a wide range of applications including both industrial and domestic products. Read more.


Congratulations

The Light Metals Flagship is pleased to acknowledge Nigel Ricketts and Craig Korn, from CSIRO Manufacturing and Infrastructure Technology (CMIT) in Brisbane, who were recently awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the United States Environmental Protection Agency for outstanding technical contributions to its ‘Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) Emission Reduction Partnership’ scheme. The Light Metals Flagship is a CSIRO initiative and part of the National Research Flagships program that aims to deliver scientific solutions to advance Australia's most important national objectives. One of the largest scientific initiatives ever mounted in Australia, it aligns closely with the Federal Government's National Research Priorities. The initiative brings together our national research resources to deliver breakthroughs in fields ranging from healthcare to light metals and the environment.
