Flagship welcomes cancer expert as Flagship Fellow

Leading cancer expert, Professor Graeme Young, has been appointed as a Flagship Fellow to help the Preventative Health National Research Flagship in its fight against one of Australia’s biggest killers, colorectal (bowel) cancer.

Dr Young has been granted the six-month Flagship Fellowship to enhance the Flagship’s work in colorectal cancer. He heads a multi-dimensional research and clinical team at the Flinders Centre for Digestive Health and the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer Care, Prevention and Research, based at Flinders Medical Centre and Repatriation General Hospital.

Flagship Director Dr Richard Head says Professor Young will provide enhanced clinical focus and insight and applied scientific input to the colorectal cancer research being undertaken within the Flagship.

Colorectal cancer is the most prevalent form of newly diagnosed cancer affecting Australians, affecting one in 21 people. But if detected early, it can be successfully treated.

“Professor Young’s clinical expertise will be important in helping the Flagship to seek clinical opportunities for CSIRO’s platforms and skills in the area of colorectal cancer and its prevention,” Dr Head said.

“He will also play an important role in bringing together scientists from different disciplines and developing our research into early detection, diet/gene interactions in food and the success of cancer screening uptake.”

Professor Young, who also undertakes a broad range of international roles in cancer research, said that the best way to control cancer is through prevention.

Professor Young’s fellowship is part of an ongoing partnership with the Flagship. His team at the Flinders University of SA is working with a medical diagnostic technology company, Enterix, on a Flagship project to identify the next generation of biomarkers which can be used to identify pre-cancerous adenomas, a proportion of which are capable of progressing to cancer.

This is the second Preventative Health National Research Flagship Fellowship. The inaugural Fellowship was granted to University of Adelaide Associate Professor Deborah Turnbull in 2004 as part of a collaborative research study to encourage people to use early colorectal cancer screening kits.
