Dr Rajakumar, Flagship Director

The past three months have seen significant progress in several Light Metals Flagship projects, some of them highlighted in this Update.

Scientific breakthroughs are critical to the development of landmark 'step-change' technologies. Such breakthroughs not only require good science but a cross-disciplinary approach.

For example, the Light Metals Flagship has already identified:

  • the novel chemistry involved in direct synthesis of titanium-aluminium alloys

  • the physics and chemistry of condensing reactive mixtures of magnesium vapour and carbon monoxide gas from 1700°C

  • novel heat-treatment regimes to produce blister-free, high-pressure aluminium diecastings.

The Flagship is continuously addressing the challenge of converting such exciting breakthroughs into larger-scale technologies and profitable, commercial operating systems.

Our engagement with industry, government and research partners is crucial to this process of innovation.

Following the successful Titanium Industry Forum and Workshops that we held in April – featuring presentations from international experts and the involvement of the International Titanium Association – we are now planning an aluminium industry forum scheduled for August.
