A community creating its future options

Photo: Dr Iris Bohnet and Keith NobleIn the first research of its kind in the Tully-Murray Floodplains of north Queensland, residents are being asked to be involved in building a picture of what they would like their community to look like in 2025.

Research undertaken by the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship, in partnership with the Cardwell Shire Floodplain Program, aims to work with farmers, land managers, community groups, industry and local government to ensure that local knowledge and values are included in the area's future developments.

"We are no longer just talking about improving the environment; it's about finding out what people want and value in that environment," says CSIRO project leader Dr Iris Bohnet.

"Location, people and the economy are the basic building blocks of sustaining a community and these change as communities grow and work to improve their quality of life.

"Information has to be current and accurate to make the best decisions possible for a community's future."

Local industries, indigenous, environmental, clubs, youth, senior and schools groups as well as individual landholders, farmers and non-landholders are being encouraged to contact Dr Bohnet over the next two months to participate in a series of interviews, focus groups and workshops.

"With Far North Queensland’s rapid pace of change, local people need to make time to be part of creating our area's future – it's too important to leave to chance.

"Dr Bohnet's research will provide important community information to the Far North Queensland Natural Resource Management Board and Cardwell Shire Council in developing strategies to ensure our future livelihoods and well-being."

The research is part of the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship's Floodplain Renewal program which aims improve water quality and protect the Great Barrier Reef by developing sustainable land use and landscape management solutions for the regional coastal floodplains.
