David McCarthy Modelling microrganisms in stormwater
Urban stormwater utilisation has great potential in integrated water management. However, it also poses potential health risks, including those associated with the presence of microorganisms. In order to utilise urban stormwater, it is necessary to identify the levels of microorganisms entering stormwater through urban runoff. However, it is impractical to measure every microorganism level at every urban stormwater utilisation site, and is not possible for urban developments that are yet to be constructed. . A more practical way of determining the microorganism level is to use a modelling tool. The majority of models that predict microorganisms are based on rural catchments and, although they provide important background, they are rarely directly transferable to urban catchments. This research will aim to provide a new model, or a set of algorithms, that describes and predicts the way in which microorganisms behave in the urban environment. A review of the current literature is now underway and preliminary results include the development of the conceptual microorganism model. This research is a collaboration between CSIRO and Monash Universtiy with supervision provided by Clare Diaper (CSIRO) and Grace Mitchell, Ana Deletic and Tony Ladson (Monash University).
