Throughout the ages people's life expectancies have been increasing. Within the past century alone, longevity of Australians has risen by more than 20 years. Coupled with a four-fold increase in Australia's population, this has driven a major boost to our economy - gains from increased healthy years and health improvements. Read more
Scientists from the P-Health Flagship have developed an integrated microscope system to automatically count fluorescently tagged bacteria.
The automated system has been developed for use in human population studies
which required reliable counts of particular bacterial species found in
faeces that may be protective against colorectal cancer.

Preventative Health National Research Flagship researchers have developed a new way to protect health-promoting probiotic bacteria. The Flagship work by researchers Ross Crittenden, Luz Sanguansri, Mary Ann Augustin, and Rangika Weerakkody, based at Food Science Australia, has been highlighted by the American Society for Microbiology (AMS) in the May 2006 edition of its journal Microbe.Read more
Improvements in health account for almost half the gain in US living standards in the past 50 years. Improvements in lifespan account for almost half of the actual gain in Australian living standards in the past 40 years. Read more
PhD student with the Preventative Health Flagship and Adelaide University, Gemma Brierley, is on her second collaborative visit to Oxford University, England, as part of her research work on colorectal (bowel) cancer. Read more
