A passion for ensuring the success of the
Preventative Health National Research Flagship is what drives Dr Lynne
Cobiac.

As Business Development Manager of this
multidisciplinary flagship initiative, Lynne
has been with the Flagship from its
inception three years ago and assisted with developing strategic directions and securing
funding.

A background in clinical dietetics,
nutritional biochemistry and scientific
research in the area of nutrition and
consumer science, coupled with an
Advanced Masters of Business
Administration (MBA) have armed Lynne for her role to help progress a
major national research goal in preventative health through the
development of partnerships and the integration of many different
sciences.

"In the early days I could see the huge, exciting challenge brought about
by the flagship," Lynne says.

"I still feel this excitement today, and the job is still as challenging as it
was when the flagship first started.

"The flagship provides me with an opportunity to marry my science
background with the business framework learnt through my MBA, an
opportunity to bring together a diverse array of skills."

Lynne recalls the early days of the flagship three years ago when
scientists from diverse research backgrounds, such as molecular biology,
mathematics and statistics, first sat down and began to share their
science – and trying to overcome the language barriers of their particular
disciplines.

"In those early days it was exhilarating to be part of that interaction,"
she says. "It was a relatively new way of doing research for CSIRO at
that time.

"This is now being achieved on a daily basis at project level and between projects."

The Flagship now operates its $20 million research program around
Australia through research teams which integrate many disciplines, such
as food technology, biomedical research, mathematics, and molecular
biology, with people from a diverse range of sciences contributing their
expertise. Research ranges from the development of protective foods,
novel diagnostics and biomarkers, to innovative technology to manage
health data, and even the development of environmental health
monitoring tools.

Lynne began her career as a clinical dietician before completing her PhD
in n-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular risk factors in 1993.

"There was a lot of interest in the role of fish oils and I was privileged to
be working with renowned professors Paul Nestel and Peter Howe," she
says.

Her research interests then took her into a wide variety of research areas including consumer science, iron deficiency, cross-cultural differences in nutritional intakes, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, as well as
research in ageing, and gastrointestinal health.

She has also held senior management committee membership positions at CSIRO, and academic positions at the Flinders University. Lynne was also the Editor of the Australian Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics for several years.

For the past three years, Lynne combined the flagship's business
management with a role as the Flagship's Research Leader for Protective
Foods.

Now, her increased focus on business development will develop the
flagship's research and business opportunities, including commercial
development and external partnerships.

The Preventative Health Flagship is a CSIRO initiative and part of the National Research Flagships program that aims to deliver scientific solutions to advance Australia's most important national objectives. One of the largest scientific initiatives ever mounted in Australia, it aligns closely with the Federal Government's National Research Priorities. The initiative brings together our national research resources to deliver breakthroughs in fields ranging from healthcare to light metals and the environment.
