The world's first map to show a comprehensive summary of known offshore mineral occurrences has been released for Australia's vast marine jurisdiction.

The map shows the known seafloor locations of minerals, such as copper, gold, silver and diamond, compiled from survey information gathered over many decades. Read More

In August, the Hon Julie Bishop, Minister for Education, Science and Training, hosted the sixth Science for Breakfast at Parliament House in Canberra. On the topic Oceans of Opportunity, Craig Roy, Director of the Wealth from Oceans Flagship and Dr Mayela Rivero, research leader of Oil and Gas with the Flagship and program leader with CSIRO Petroleum Resources, delivered a dynamic presentation about the Flagship's research and the opportunities being explored in the oceans portfolio. Seven-day forecasts of ocean 'weather' – temperature, salinity and currents – will benefit seafarers, fishermen and even tourists

A powerful new suite of ocean models that can predict the influence of ocean currents on marine activity – from sonar operations to weather forecasting – has been developed in a milestone collaboration between the Royal Australian Navy, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and CSIRO through the Wealth from Oceans Flagship. An ocean observation network Australia is building to forecast climate and ocean conditions will be boosted later this year with the deployment of 20 ocean robots in the Tasman Sea and Indian Ocean.

The autonomous robotic floats have been purchased by the Royal Australian Navy in a major contribution to national ocean observing infrastructure developed by Australian research agencies.

To address the growing need for comprehensive information about our marine environments, a collaboration involving Curtin University of Technology in Perth with the Wealth from Oceans Flagship, is exploring the development of new nanochemical hydrocarbon sensor technologies to detect and discriminate between different hydrocarbons.
