Food Futures Flagship Director,
Dr Bruce Lee

The highlights for the Flagship in recent months have been the completion of two major partnerships. In August, Food Futures announced a $4 million collaboration to advance our research in the development of a new generation of electronic nose, the 'Cybernose'. A collaboration involving The Australian National University, Monash University and the Flagship's Biosensor team, the program is the first of the Collaboration Clusters developed as part of the Flagship Collaboration Fund initiative to enhance research efforts between CSIRO, Australian universities and other research agencies. Read more in Insect 'noses' the key to Cybernose collaboration.

In November a major partnership between CSIRO through the Food Futures Flagship, the Grain Research and Development Corporation and Limagrain, internationally renowned agrifood company, was formalised. This partnership is building on the Flagship's cutting-edge research in the production of high-value and healthy new varieties of wheat. A significant international collaboration, this joint venture is helping to deliver innovative solutions to advance Australia's wheat and food industries. The partnership is focused on the development of new healthy wheats varieties with health benefits and commercial potential. You can read more about this in R&D partnership targets 'super-healthy' wheats.

The Flagship's research is proving to have very wide appeal, particularly the Cybernose and Omega-3 projects. These research projects were featured in two television segments on the highly popular Scope television program, Network Ten's afternoon show for teenagers and younger viewers, aired in October. James Petrie from CSIRO Plant Industry was interviewed for the Flagship's Omega-3 research project. For the Cybernose project, the Flagship's Quality Biosensors Theme Leader, Stephen Trowell, explored the intricacies of developing an electronic nose.

The Australian Agri-food Forum, held at Monash University in October, provided a prime opportunity showcase the Food Futures research portfolio to some of Australia's leading agribusiness. The Flagship Director was an invited presenter at the Forum giving a presentation on the subject "A vision for the Australian agri-food industry".

On the international front, Food Futures together with Food Science Australia, hosted visits by the Chilean Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Alejandro Foxley, and a delegation from China. Mr Foxley's group was interested in Australia's developments in the wine industry, and in particular the Cybernose project, while the Chinese visitors were interested in learning about Australia's experience in supporting the technical adoption of technical innovations in agribusiness. Read more in International focus on Food Futures Flagship.

In building the Flagship team's capabilities and providing the latest information in global agribusiness trends, the Flagship held its annual convention, Vision '06 in Adelaide in August. With more than 140 delegates attending, the three day conference provided a stimulating and thought provoking environment for all who attended. An overview of the conference is at Vision for Food Futures.

The wonderful world of glowworms is being examined by our Flagship Fellow, Emeritus Professor Rod Rickards. Professor Rickards is based at The Australian National University and is researching bioluminescence – the naturally occurring emission of light by living organisms. Professor Rickards' fellowship is profiled in Fellowship explores the secrets of glowworms.

In Meet the Scientist, we welcome Dr Conor Delahunty to the Flagship and Food Science Australia team. Dr Delahunty, originally from Ireland, has international experience in the areas of flavour and sensory science, particularly the study of volatile compounds and the consumer perception of these.

In this edition we also bring you the latest on research into the structures and properties of dried proteins, the awarding of a prestigious Fellowship of the Nutrition Society Australia to Dr David Topping and a report from Veronica Glattauer, who received the CSIRO Chief Executive's Study Award. You can read Veronica's report at Study award expands research horizons.

I trust you enjoy reading Food Futures Update and welcome your feedback on the Flagship's articles.

Seasons greeting from the Flagship team!

Dr Bruce Lee
Director
