Insect 'noses' the key to Cybernose collaboration

Researchers in the collaborative Cluster between The Australian National University, Monash University and CSIRO's Food Futures National Research Flagship are trying to understand how simple animals make sense of smells. Researchers are looking at ways to smooth the bumps in the road to market for Australia's agrifoods sector. There was a time when the local produce market was in the town square; a straight cart run from farm to the centre of town. Today a lot of farm produce has to be freighted hundreds of kilometres and involves a vast transport, packaging and storage infrastructure.

Adelaide was the meeting point for the Food Futures Vision '06 Conference in August.

The conference brought together the Food Futures team from across the entire Flagship portfolio together with a number of eminent representatives from industry and affiliated research partners. The three day conference was well supported with more than 140 delegates attending.

Rod Rickards, an Emeritus Professor and Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University, has been awarded a Visiting Fellowship in the Food Futures Flagship. He is working with Dr Stephen Trowell, Theme Leader of the Quality Biosensors group which is developing technologies to assist in winemaking and improve the global competitiveness of the Australian wine industry. The world of dried proteins

Proteins are one of the principal components in food which have a diverse function ranging from structures that control mouthfeel and texture, emulsification to stabilise oil drops and importantly providing nutrition in products. Although ubiquitous, very little is known about the protein molecular properties that govern these attributes and their material behaviour in dried and semi-dried foods. Read more


Study Award expands research horizons

This award gave Veronica the opportunity to obtain first hand experience in two leading international laboratories and review the latest developments in the area of basement membrane research. Veronica is based in CSIRO Molecular and Health Technologies in Clayton Victoria and works in the Food Futures Flagship Breed Engineering Theme. Read more
