Flagship
Mr Alejandro Foxley, Chilean Minister for Foreign Affairs, visited the Riverside Life Sciences Centre in North Ryde this week, accompanied by a group of advisors and Chilean media representatives. Dr Bruce Lee provided an overview of the exciting work being achieved in the Food Futures portfolio and the guests were introduced to Food Science Australia by Mr Walter Edgar. The Flagship's Cybernose project was of particular interest as the visiting delegation included representatives from the Chilean wine industry. A visit to Food Science Australia's Sensory Testing Facility shed further light on the Cybernose project, as Dr Ciaran Forde explained the role of chemical compounds in determining the sensory characteristics of wine. The next day, Dr Lee and Mr Edgar welcomed a delegation from China, visiting Australia under the Australia-China Agriculture Cooperation Agreement (ACACA). The group included Mr Shi Yanquan, Deputy Director-General, Department of Science & Technology Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Mr He Junwei, Deputy Director-General of the Industrialization Office, Ministry of Agriculture who were primarily interested in learning from Australia's experience in supporting the adoption of technical innovation in agribusiness. After an introduction to the Food Futures Flagship and Food Science Australia, the group was led on a tour of Food Science Australia's Container Test Facility by Mr Andrew Eddy, who explained how the facility is used to simulate real-time international shipping conditions for food. The group was then introduced to The Sensory Testing Facility by Ms Astrid Poelman, who explained the role of sensory science in assessing consumer preference for foods.
