Two CSIRO researchers have been appointed to lead the Preventative Health Flagship's Health Data and Information and Neurodegenerative Diseases research themes.

Dr Christine O'Keefe has been appointed Theme Leader for Health Data and Information (HD&I), while Division of Molecular and Health Technologies theme leader Dr Peter Hudson is heading the Neurodegenerative Diseases theme.

Christine, previously CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences Division's (CMIS) Health Informatics leader, will lead the HD&I theme which covers the critical area of human data, from its integration using ICT-based approaches, its analysis using statistics and algorithms and privacy through analytics.

Theme activities include investments in the e-Health Research Centre, a joint venture between CSIRO and Queensland Health. The Flagship's environmental health forecasting research in this Theme involves CMAR, the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health and EPAs in Queensland and Victoria. The Flagship also conducts privacy preserving analytics research based in CMIS.

Christine says her new role presents an exciting opportunity to draw on her knowledge of mathematics, statistics and ICT capacities, and her background in establishing the ICT Centre's security and privacy work.

"Our theme's challenge is to bring together these capabilities with clinical expertise to achieve impact in health, particularly in preventative health applications," she says.

Peter Hudson has been appointed Theme Leader for Preventative Health activities in neurodegenerative diseases, principally around Alzheimer's Disease (AD).

In this role Peter will oversee two critical aspects of this theme, current activities involving the structure of the beta-amyloid protein - thought to play a role in the development of AD, and the establishment of Collaboration Fund Cluster activities wtih the Australian Imaging, Biomarker and Lifestyle (AIBL) Flagship Study of Ageing.

Flagship research leader Dr Trevor Lockett will continue as Theme Leader for all activities in the flagship's Colorectal Cancer theme.
