Kids Eat, Kids Play - survey begins
During September and October researchers began randomly contacting families in Whyalla to ask if they are interested in taking part in the first phase of the national survey. Announced recently by the Australian Government's Department of Health and Ageing, the survey - Kids Eat, Kids Play - is the first on this scale in more than a decade. It will involve more than 4000 young people aged between two to 16 years from both metropolitan and regional Australia. The survey will be carried out through a research partnership between CSIRO through its Preventative Health National Research Flagship and Human Nutrition Centre, and the University of South Australia. Those who take part will be interviewed twice to collect information about children's food intake, activity patterns, and physical measurements. Additional information will be collected using a pedometer for children aged over five, and some general questions about the household will be asked. Nutrition survey activities are managed by the Preventative Health Flagship's Dr Lynne Cobiac, and will involve children and young people aged two to 16 years. Whyalla and metropolitan Brisbane in Queensland were the first areas chosen to participate this year. The survey will involve 230 other locations across Australia and is due for completion in July next year.
