Flagship student in Singapore collaboration
Preventative Health PhD student Cheng Cheng Ooi is developing her skills in a four-month study block at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Cheng Cheng, a joint CSIRO and University of South Australia student, began her four-month placement at the Oncoproteomics Laboratory – Protein and Proteomics Centre, National University of Singapore in September. She is working with Professor Maxey Chung and Dr Sandra Tan who have published proteomic data on her areas of academic interest - butyrate-treated HT-29 and HCT-116 cells. The role of butyrate, a short chain fatty acid found in certain foods, is being investigated for its effects on cancer cells. "This visit will expand my research experience and skills," she says. "This will be a chapter to my thesis and hopefully a joint journal article will be published from the work." Cheng Cheng also hopes the work will help promote future collaboration between CSIRO, UniSA and NUS. Her visit was made possible through a UniSA Higher Degree Research International Travel Grant.
NUS has been ranked amongst the world's top 20
universities, and among the top three universities in Asia, in the QS World
University Rankings 2006 conducted by the Times Higher Education Supplement
(THES).
