Acting Director

Meet Mr John Gunn

Mr John Gunn joins the Wealth from Oceans Flagship, in the position of Acting Director, from CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, where as Deputy Chief he has lead a research portfolio spanning Climate, Weather and Ocean Prediction, Atmospheric Observation and Processes, Integrated Coastal and Oceans Management, and Marine Ecosystems and Resources.

John's science background is in marine ecology, with particular emphasis on the application of science to management of Australian and international marine resources. In the study of pelagic fish, John's research has focused on population biology, ecophysiology, stock structure and migration of tunas and billfish. He and his group have been leaders in the development of electronic tagging technologies and their application in innovative research on the movement, behaviour and physiology of fishes. He has also worked to improve the efficiency of feeding strategies used in Australia's pioneering and lucrative tuna farming industry, and the application of fisheries science to improved management of wild fish populations.

John has played a key role in the interface between fisheries science, management and policy development within Australia and in Regional Fisheries Management Organisations for over a decade. He has held positions on several Australian Fisheries Management Authority advisory committees, as well as the Chair of the Eastern Tuna Resource Assessment Group, Chair of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission Billfish Assessment Group, and a member of Australian delegations to the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna. He is a member of the Commonwealth Fisheries Research Advisory Board.

John also maintains his broader scientific interests as an invited member of the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research Panel on New Observing Technologies for Observing Marine Life, the Global Ocean Observing System Scientific Steering Committee and roles in the Census of Marine Life.
