June 2007 National Research Flagship Water For A Healthy Country

Water Research Alliance for South-East Queensland

A $50 million partnership, the Urban Water Security Research Alliance, has been formed to address South-East Queensland's emerging urban water issues.

The partnership is between:

  • Queensland Government
  • CSIRO
  • the University of Queensland
  • Griffith University, Brisbane.

The Urban Water Security Research Alliance will focus on:

  • Building reliability and safety into recycling programs through innovative new technologies and use of naturally occurring underground water storages (aquifers);
  • providing technical advice and scientific backup to inform the community about alternative water supply options and;
  • developing technologies and processes that quantify the risks associated with recycling and implementing monitoring and control systems.

As the largest urban water research program in Australia the Alliance will also link with other research institutions, including the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Quality and Treatment, the e-Water CRC, and the Water Services Association of Australia. The Alliance will draw on their expertise in:

  • water treatment
  • delivery tools
  • general water service provision.

The program brings a new capacity to South East Queensland tailored to tackling existing and anticipated future risks, assumptions and uncertainties facing water supply strategy.

The South-East Queensland region faces increasing pressure on their present water resources, due to a booming economy and growing population. These pressures are compounded by the impact of climate variability and accelerating climate change. More about the aims of the Alliance.
