Message from the Director

How quickly things
change in the energy scene.
With the recent
change in the Federal Government, Australia has moved to ratify the
Kyoto Protocol, we have a renewable energy target of 20 per cent by
2020, a 60 per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2000
by 2050 and a mix of new government support opportunities in low
emissions research, development and demonstration in the planning
stages.

Future Fuels Forum commences
The
transport sector is the third biggest emitter of greenhouse
gases in Australia, and the Energy Transformed National Research
Flagship and its collaborators are focusing on finding solutions
to this crucial issue through the new Future Fuels Forum.

PCC projects to tackle climate
change
As
the need to clean up the use of fossil fuels continues to gain
attention, CSIRO’s Energy Transformed Flagship has been working on a
range of Post Combustion Capture (PCC) projects to help tackle
climate change.
PCC is a process
that captures carbon dioxide from power station flue gases and is a
key technology that can potentially reduce carbon dioxide emissions
from existing and future coal-fired power stations by more than 85
per cent.

High IQ: Smart agents are getting
smarter
“Intelligent
energy” research has seen a significant advance in Smart Agent
energy management technology over the past year, linking the control
of energy generation with the management of demand.
This project
contributes to the Energy Transformed National Research Flagship’s
Distributed Energy research, which aims to develop and demonstrate
energy generation systems that are located close to the consumer and
are cleaner and more efficient than conventional energy sources.

Smarter energy storage for solar
and wind power
While
renewable energy has the potential to significantly reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, it continues to hold some challenges. For
example, how can these sources continue to provide energy when the
wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining?

Biofuels reports: looking to
Australia's transport future
The Energy
Transformed National Research Flagship’s alternative fuels research
program recently reached an important milestone with the launch of
four CSIRO authored reports at the Bioenergy Australia conference in
November 2007.
The biofuels
publications were released by the Rural Industries Research and
Development Corporation (RIRDC) and completed a series that began
with the successful launch in June 2007 of Biofuels in Australia
– an overview of issues and prospects.
