Message from the Director
It has been a fascinating voyage since the commencement of the Program in 2002. I look back with considerable pride on the Flagship’s achievements and all the people who have contributed to its success. People have been the key, from those at the bench doing the essential science and technology development, our commercial people who work with our many supporters to turn that science into applications, and the management support both in CSIRO and through our Advisory Committees. This
will be my last newsletter as, after 6 ½ years at the helm, I will be
stepping down as the Flagship Director at the end of the year.
The
Energy Transformed Flagship is expanding its renewable energy portfolio in
2009, developing research capability in geothermal energy to provide zero
emission, sustainable power for Australian cities.
Solar
thermal energy has the potential to provide, amongst other things, heating
or cooling at home and at work. In this edition of the newsletter, we talk
to Research Project Manager Sarah Miller about solar trough technologies.
In
Australia, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) typically
accounts for over 60 per cent of energy use in commercial buildings.
The
Energy Transformed Flagship’s social research team has travelled the breadth
of Australia to run a series of Climate Change and Energy Workshops and gain
insight into public knowledge of and perceptions about climate change and
low emission technologies.
The
Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) recently
held its 31st National Symposium, looking at the timely topic of Alternative
Transport Fuels for Australia.
CSIRO
expertise as part of the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas
Technologies’ (CO2CRC), recently received a prestigious industry award for
its teamwork, value creation and innovation.
