Malaysian delegation on tour
at Clayton laboratories
Last Thursday 4 May the Malaysian Minister for Science Technology and Innovation Dr Maximus Ongkili and a small delegation visited Molecular and Health Technologies (CMHT) and the Future Manufacturing Flagship (FMF).
Other members of the delegation included Dr Khatijah Yusoff, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Universiti Putra Malaysia, Dr Nor Muhammad Muhadi, Director General, Malaysia Genome Institute, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and Mrs Norizan, Press Secretary to Minister Ongkili.

Graeme Woodrow, Chief, CMHT presented an overview of CSIRO and shared some areas of interest with the group including Biomedical Materials, Flexible Electronics and CSIRO's work with the biotechnology industry. He was also able to discuss the relationship that CSIRO has developed with Petronas that involves CMHT, Petroleum Resources and Wealth from Oceans Flagship amongst others and our involvement with SIRIM Berhad, a similar agency to CSIRO in Malaysia, through the Global Research Alliance. The party were then taken on a tour of some of the research areas at the CSIRO Clayton laboratories involving John Tsanaktsidis and John Ramshaw. Clive Davenport, Director of FMF, was also able to meet with the delegation during the tour.
The delegation showed significant interest in the Flexible Electronics work as applied to solar energy capture, an area led by Gerry Wilson. Gerry impressed the party by demonstrating that photovoltaic cells could be printed onto polymer sheets. Gerry will be doing a follow up visit while visiting Malaysia later this month.
Paul Harris from Government and International was also able to organise for the delegation to visit the Australian Stem Cell Centre, the Synchrotron and Monash University.
