CSIRO signs new plastics deal with PETRONAS

CSIRO, through the Sustainable Polymeric Materials Theme, has partnered with PETRONAS to develop new degradable plastic technology.

Degradable plastics from bio-derived or conventional petroleum based feedstock are used in a variety of applications. This will help to reduce the environmental impact of plastic based litter, such as plastic bags through to agricultural films. It will also help to improve the efficiency and sustainability of crop production.

The new technology will serve as a second generation to PETRONAS' current range of degradable polyethylene, which is manufactured through their PetChem Polyolefin Business.

Compliance with Australian and international standards for compostable plastics as well as the European REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances) program are viewed as key advantages the project will deliver.
