WRON Visualisation and Collaboration Centre

Water has become a vigorously contested resource in Australia. Efficient water resource management and informed decision making is currently hampered by a lack of sound water information. The Water for a Healthy Country Flagship is developing a national Water Resources Observation Network (WRON) by establishing a technology platform to provide an Australia-wide network of water information systems delivering dynamic, timely reporting and forecasting of Australia's water resources.

A key research area of WRON is to develop improved reporting and visualisation tools to provide a single, national reporting interface for water resource observations and forecasts. To this end, the WRON Visualisation and Collaboration Centre ("the Centre") has been built to provide an environment for the investigation and development of new visualisation tools, interfaces and technologies to meet this new level of information reporting.

"Current reporting typically consists of minimal, static views of water information. However, with improved sensing, data integration and forecasting, new methods of analysing spatial and temporal information in a timely manner are required," says Mr Ross Ackland, WRON Leader.

The WRON Visualisation and Collaboration Centre will enable spatial analysts, remote sensing and modelling researchers the opportunity to explore data in new ways including the fusion of multiple data sets, data mining and time series visualisations.

"For example, live monitoring of river flow could be considered with real-time flow data visualisations integrated with webcam images of the river, overlaid on a map of the area. Modelling results for the region could also be incorporated for comparison of prediction versus observation. This type of scenario could be of use in planning, operational monitoring or education."

In addition to providing a workspace that enables intensive collaboration between participants, the Centre will also be used as an education and meeting facility where WRON achievements will be showcased to stakeholders and the public through a 6-metre interactive story wall with two touch screens.

The Centre, located at CSIRO's Black Mountain site in Canberra, includes a

  • Large projection screen: Normal 2D and 3D projection
  • Horizontal projection table (multi-touch surface): For geospatial data suited to display on a horizontal surface.
  • Interactive whiteboard
  • 7 metre interactive story wall
