The MDBC International River Health ConferenceOver 1,000 students and teachers from across Australia gathered in the Nation's capital in October for the 2007 MDBC International River Health Conference, and the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship joined in to inspire our next generation of environmental leaders. Based on the kids-teaching-kids concept, the conference is one of a very successful series of similar events run by Aaron Wood, the 2007 Prime Minister's Environmentalist of the Year Award winner, aimed at providing hands on, student-centred learning to bring about a cultural change in the way we perceive our natural environment and the industries they support. The Flagship staff ran a two-day activity day around Canberra's Lake Ginninderra with staff from the University of Canberra. Students made short films with a sustainability message, constructed mini-catchments, and threw tennis balls at each other (to mimic rainfall) all in the name of fun and science. |
