$50M Research Alliance tackles urban water sustainabilityA $50m partnership between the Queensland Government, CSIRO, University of Queensland and Griffith University has been signed to establish the SEQ URBAN WATER SECURITY RESEARCH ALLIANCE. The five-year project been formed to address South-East Queensland's emerging urban water issues, with a focus on climate change, water loss management, enhanced treatment, water reuse, social engagement and science capacity building. In addition to increasing community confidence in future water supply, the alliance stands to free the region from the economic uncertainty of future rainfall and climate change patterns, and to contribute to the development and adoption of new practices in urban wastewater and stormwater recycling to increase our national water security. Seven of the ten research projects are headed by CSIRO staff, across each of the three research areas – ‘Closing the Loop in our Water Supply System', ‘Informing Decision Making', and ‘Managing our New Water Supply System.' Dr. Mark O'Donohue of CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems is acting Alliance Director, and is enthusiastic about the opportunities the alliance provides. "What this give us is the opportunity to bring some of Australia's foremost research institutions together to focus on the growth area of urban water," he says, "as well as the unique opportunity to complement the investment in infrastructure occurring in Queensland with a similar investment in research to optimise water cycle management now and into the future."
