Ovens region: CSIRO Murray-Darling Basin Sustainable Yields Project

The Ovens region is one of a series of 18 regions being assessed as part of the CSIRO Murray-Darling Basin Sustainable Yields Project.

Background

The Ovens region is in north-eastern Victoria and represents 0.7 per cent of the total area of the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB).

The region has a population of around 46 000 people concentrated in the centres of :

  • Wangaratta
  • Myrtleford
  • Beechworth
  • Bright.

  • The region, in north-eastern Victoria, represents 0.7 per cent of the total area of the Basin
  • It uses 0.2 per cent of the total surface water diverted for irrigation in the Murray-Darling Basin, and 0.4 per cent of the total groundwater resource that is extracted in the Basin
