Overview

Australia's best scientific research capabilities are being brought together to address the sustainable management of our water resources and deliver relevant and effective water management options.

With a total investment of approximately A$90 million per annum, the Flagship is the largest research partnership focusing on water in Australia.

The Flagship aims to provide Australians with solutions for water resource management, creating economic gains while protecting or restoring our major water ecosystems.

As demand for water increases, climate changes and as economically and environmentally viable storage sites dwindle, Australia is looking to new strategies that reduce demand, increase efficiency, re-use wastewater and allow water to be traded.

Our science is informing the decisions on where and how to best invest in these options and is providing enabling technologies.

The Water for a Healthy Flagship aims to provide Australians with solutions for water resource management, creating economic gains while protecting or restoring our major water ecosystems.

The Water for a Healthy Country Flagship is one of 10 National Research Flagships established by CSIRO since 2003 as part of the National Research Flagship Program.

Flagships are partnerships of leading Australian scientists, research institutions, commercial companies and international partners.

Their scale, long time-frames and clear focus on delivery and adoption of research outputs are designed to maximise their impact in key areas of economic and community need. Flagships address the major national challenges: health, energy, light metals, oceans, food, manufacturing, climate, minerals exploration, agriculture and water.

The Flagship is run by a senior management team comprised of a Director, Science Director, Business Development Manager and four theme leaders.

This team is supported by a Finance Manager, Communication Manager and an Executive Officer. The strategic direction of the Flagship is guided by a Flagship Advisory Council made up of representatives from the water sector, external parties with commercial skills and contacts and the CSIRO Land and Water Chief.
