Science for Schools overview

Today’s school students will be the scientists, policy-makers and voters of tomorrow. So they need a strong grounding in science to be able to participate.

CSIRO's school programs operate around Australia. We offer relevant examples to primary and high school students about the value and relevance of science to industry, communities and society.

In this way, the programs:

• alert school students, their families and teachers of science to the contribution of scientific research by CSIRO and other organisations to our community
• encourage students to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology
• engage, enthuse and educate students, teachers and the community about science and its applications.

Through its range of school education programs, CSIRO reaches over half a million students, teachers, parents and community members across Australia each year. These programs include:

• rewarding students’ and teachers’ achievements and providing incentives for involvement in science, through awards and competitions
• providing inspiration for teachers and students and new ways to get involved in science through CSIRO Science Education Centres 
• creating partnerships between teachers and professional scientists, engineers and mathematicians through Scientists in Schools
• CSIRO's Double Helix Science Club school groups
• workshops, training, teachers guides and many other teacher resources.
