The abundance and cost effectiveness of oil and gas means they will be with us for many years to come, even though alternatives to these fuels are being developed in many fields.
Petroleum products have such widespread and important uses, that many materials we use in our every day lives from computers to cars, come from oil and gas. As such, Australia’s economic wealth and growth relies heavily on our petroleum self-sufficiency.
CSIRO is working on ways to maximise the efficiency of hydrocarbon (oil and gas) exploration and production.
CSIRO has committed its petroleum research and development programs to maximising our precious crude oil reserves and uncovering the massive supplies of remote gas which are currently ‘stranded’ offshore the North West Shelf of Australia.

We are also playing an integral role in preparing Australia and the region for the transition to new energy sources in the future.
