For the first time in history, more than half of the world’s population live in cities.
Urban Systems Research Program
CSIRO urban research is enabling more sustainable cities through trans-disciplinary research and the development of new technologies and modelling approaches.

CSIRO's Urban Systems Program is focussed on making our cities more resource-efficient, productive, liveable and resilient through improved modelling, analysis and visualisation of urban systems, components and services.
The Urban Systems Program develops and delivers science that helps the nation to respond to pressures, challenges and opportunities related to urban areas, and their communities.
We focus particularly on:
- developing options for sustainable and efficient supply and use of energy, materials and water
- modelling the functionality, integrity, resilience and environmental sustainability of buildings and infrastructure systems
- land use and supply chain optimisation
- developing solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation of the built environment.
