CSIRO is part of a strategic alliance with PetroChina, enhancing CSIRO's energy ties with China and delivering world-class technology and research for the oil and gas industry.
CSIRO has joined an elite group to form a strategic energy research alliance with PetroChina.
The alliance strengthens long-term cooperation and research into oil and gas exploration and production as well as wider energy technologies, reaffirming the long standing relationship CSIRO has with the Research Institute Petroleum Exploration and Development (RIPED), PetroChina's research arm.
PetroChina
PetroChina is China's largest petroleum company and one of the major producers and distributors of petroleum and petrochemical products in the world.
The strongly competitive international energy company engages in a wide range of activities related to oil and natural gas and has won recognitions in the international capital market for its excellent corporate governance and high profitability.
The alliance has provided PetroChina with access to a number of CSIRO licenced technologies that improve the characterisation and prediction of the presence and quantity of oil.
The alliance aims to strengthen research into oil and gas technologies by combining the diverse capabilities and knowledge base of the partners.
These technologies have been applied to China's unique geological basin environments where conventional methods have been proven ineffective.
The techniques, Quantitative Grain Fluorescence (QGF) and Quantitative Grain Fluorescence on Extract (QGF-E), provide information on the presence and type of hydrocarbons enabling researchers to estimate the current and previous oil saturation of reservoirs.
Another CSIRO developed technique is the Fluorescence Alteration of Multiple Macerals (FAMM) designed to improve petroleum software models that estimate oil and gas reserves.
The development of SEDSIM, a modelling software, was recently granted a research excellence award from PetroChina, for its significant impact.
Collaboration
The strategic agreement formalises a 20 year working relationship and identifies a number of areas for collaboration in addition to joint research activities such as training and development of staff, student exchange, opportunities to host visiting scholars and postdoctoral researchers and sharing research and information.
The alliance aims to strengthen research into oil and gas technologies by combining the diverse capabilities and knowledge base of the partners.
The energy alliance includes partnerships with:
- Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP)
- Standford University
- University of Texas, Austin
- Gubkin Russian State University of Oil & Gas.
