International collaboration to develop statistical tools for ecological management

Environmental statisticians from CSIRO and Keio University, Japan, are working together to develop solutions for environmental problems.

The partnership

CSIRO and Keio University, Japan, have been awarded an Australia-Japan Foundation Grant to enable them to collaborate on the development of innovative statistical tools for ecological management.

The Australia-Japan Foundation was established by the Australian Government in 1976 to strengthen the Australia-Japan relationship across a broad range of areas including education, culture and business.

The partners

The partners hope to develop a common technical framework and approach to monitoring, modelling and managing biodiversity.

CSIRO and Keio University share an interest in the development of data-driven approaches to solve contemporary problems in environment and ecology.

Solutions to these problems will require the development and application of innovative statistical and mathematical methodologies, including methods for:

  • dealing with high-dimensional data
  • accounting for spatial and temporal dependence
  • dealing with sparse data.

The researchers from Keio University, led by Professor Ritei Shibata, have experience in management of large and complex data sets and novel methods for data visualisation, both of which are important in dealing with complex environmental problems.

CSIRO environmental statisticians have a strong history of dealing with environmental and ecological issues of national and international importance, and for providing innovative solutions to difficult problems.

Research aims

Initial research involves focusing on studying the effects of trawling on seabed fauna. Through this application, the partners aim to develop new statistical tools for ecological management.

The partners aim to provide a methodological basis to inform future strategies in conservation and sustainable use of ecological and environmental assets, particularly in marine zones around Australia.

The partners also hope to jointly develop a common technical framework and approach to monitoring, modelling and managing biodiversity.
