Dr Bala Thumma is part of the Biodiversity and Sustainable Production research group at CSIRO Plant Industry where he is investigating the molecular genetics of forest trees.

Current activities  

Dr Bala Thumma is currently identifying single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers associated with wood quality and adaptive traits in eucalypts using association studies.

Background  

Since joining CSIRO in 2001 as a Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr Thumma has worked to identify Quantitative Trail Locii (QTL) associated with wood quality traits in Eucalyptus nitens.

Academic qualifications

Dr Thumma has been awarded a:

• Bachelor of Science at Osmania University, Hyderabad, India, 1984
• Master of Science at Bharatidasan University, Trichy, India, 1990
• Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, 2002.

Achievements

Dr Thumma received a CSIRO Performance Award in 2007.
