Dr Beverley Ronalds: Group Executive, Energy

As Group Executive Energy, Prof Beverley Ronalds has responsibilities across the Energy, Oceans and Mineral Resources domains supported by an annual budget of $220M.

Current activities

Dr Ronalds and her team are helping to accelerate large-scale greenhouse emissions cuts through a collaborative program of research, development and demonstration. Areas of focus are to understand economic and sustainable pathways to a sustainable low-carbon future, community outreach, and delivering a suite of new energy technologies. 

Current demonstration-scale activities include carbon capture and storage, solar energy, geothermal energy and smart grids.  

Dr Ronalds is also currently participating in several Government-led initiatives in energy and innovation, including:

  • Innovation Australia
  • Australian Centre for Renewable Energy (ACRE)
  • National Carbon Capture and Storage Council (NCCSC) 
  • Australian National Low Emissions Coal R&D (ANLEC R&D)
  • Queensland Clean Coal Council
  • Technology and Industry Advisory Council (TIAC).

Background

Dr Ronalds manages CSIRO's energy, ocean and mineral resources research with an annual research budget of $220 million.

Dr Ronalds joined CSIRO in 2003 as Chief of the Division of Petroleum Resources. Previously she was the Foundation Director and Woodside Chair of The University of Western Australia's School of Oil and Gas Engineering, where she remains Distinguished Visiting Professor. 

Dr Ronalds also has industry experience in design, installation and operations support for fixed and floating offshore platforms, in the Australian North West Shelf, the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

Achievements

Dr Ronalds received engineering qualifications from the University of Melbourne and Imperial College London, where she stayed on as a lecturer. 

She is a Fellow of the:

  • Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE)
  • Institution of Civil Engineers
  • Institution of Engineers Australia
  • Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD)
  • and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

She has also been named as one of Engineers Australia’s 100 most influential engineers in 2009-11 as well as the inaugural list in 2004.
