Dr Brent Henderson: delivering statistical solutions for healthier ecosystems

Dr Brent Henderson is an environmental statistician whose primary focus is on water resources including the design of a diverse array of water quality and ecological health monitoring programs.

Current activities

Dr Henderson is a research scientist working within the research area of environmental modelling and monitoring. 

He is involved in the design of water quality and ecological health monitoring programs.

Dr Henderson is currently working with the Water for a Health Country Flagship, as Project Leader of the Adaptive Ecosystem Management Project. This is a large project that is focussed on developing knowledge and methods to ensure our water ecosystems are effectively managed across ecological, environmental, social and economic considerations.

Dr Henderson also contributes statistical expertise to the Water Resources Observation Network (WRON), helping to improve the utility of water resource information available for decision-makers in Australia.

Dr Henderson is currently focused on developing knowledge and methods to ensure our water ecosystems are effectively managed.

Background

Dr Henderson has been working with CSIRO for over seven years, during which time he has been working as an environmental statistician. 

He has collaborated on water related issues with a variety of State, Commonwealth and private agencies, including the:

  • Murray-Darling Basin Commission
  • Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Water
  • South East Queensland Water Corporation
  • West Australian Department of Water.

Dr Henderson's early work with CSIRO focused on soils research, in particular the application and development of spatial and geostatistical methodologies for broad-scale prediction of soil attributes and the advancement of soil monitoring methodologies.

Academic qualifications

Dr Henderson has been awarded:

  • a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.
  • a Master of Science in Statistics, also from the University of Otago
  • a Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics from the University of Adelaide, South Australia.

Achievements

Dr Henderson is past president of the Canberra, ACT, branch of the Statistical Society of Australia.

He is also a member of:

  • the Statistical Society of Australia
  • The International Environmetrics Society.
