Dr Brian Dalrymple: bioinformatics expert

Dr Brian Dalrymple’s research focusses on identifying and utilising genes, gene networks and biochemical pathways important to product quality characteristics of livestock.

Current activities

Dr Brian Dalrymple is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Livestock Industries in the Queensland Bioscience Precinct at The University of Queensland, St Lucia, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

He heads bioinformatics research in CSIRO Livestock Industries Division with particular interests in:

  • the development of genomics resources
  • assembly of genome sequences, primarily cow and sheep genomes
  • development of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) resources
  • non-coding RNA and
  • the comparative genomics of mammals.

Dr Dalrymple is a participant in the cattle and sheep genome international sequencing consortia.

He is also involved in research using genome sequences and gene expression data to understand the development of muscle structure and function.

Dr Dalrymple currently leads research in the Systems and Computational Biology area.

This research aims to identify and utilise genes, gene networks, biochemical pathways and biological systems to improve the product quality characteristics of livestock.

Background

Dr Dalrymple was involved in building a dedicated high performance computing facility for CSIRO bioinformatics, which is still in use today.

After a postdoctoral position at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland, studying mobile genetic elements, Dr Dalrymple joined CSIRO in 1985.

Dr Dalrymple initialy worked at the CSIRO Division of Molecular Biology, North Ryde, Sydney, from 1985 as a member of a group developing vaccines for bovine footrot.

He moved to Brisbane in 1987 to join CSIRO as a member of the Babesia bovis (tick fever) vaccine development group.

Dr Dalrymple was involved in building a dedicated high performance computing facility for CSIRO, a resource which is now being used to develop the necessary bioinformatics support for related research projects in CSIRO Livestock Industries such as the annotation of the bovine genome.

Academic qualifications

Dr Dalrymple has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (UK), in 1979
  • Doctorate in genetics from the University of Leicester, also in the UK, in 1982.

His doctoral research was on plasmid-borne DNA replication enzymes.

Achievements

Dr Darymple has published more than 65 scientific articles.
