Chris Wilcox
Dr Chris Wilcox leads research pelagic species - those species living or growing at or near the surface of the ocean, far from land.

Dr Chris Wilcox: guiding marine resource management

Dr Chris Wilcox leads research on the biological-oceanographic interactions, dispersal and population dynamics of pelagic species.

Current activities

Dr Wilcox is a research stream leader with the Wealth from Oceans Flagship.

His research involves developing and applying mathematical modelling to guide fisheries management and marine biodiversity conservation.

Dr Wilcox leads research on the spatial management of marine resources, which is becoming increasingly important as marine protected areas and area and seasonal closures are incorporated in fisheries management.

He also has an interest in developing ecologically-based policy tools to resolve inherent conflicts between human resource use and species persistence.

This involves seeking solutions that allow limited resource extraction that is both economically efficient and ecologically sustainable.

His research takes an integrated approach that combines modelling, empirical investigations and analysis of historical data.

Dr Chis Wilcox has an interest in developing ecologically-based policy tools to resolve resource conflicts.

Current projects include:

  • predicting encounter rates between seabirds and fishers in Australia's Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery
  • understanding local movements and regional connections in broadbill swordfish
  • predicting vessel location choice in a tuna fishery under input controls
  • investigating spatial fisheries management outside marine reserves for protected and harvested species
  • appliction of biodiversity offsets to the management of fishery-conservation conflicts.

Dr Wilcox is involved in projects associated with:

  • Wealth from Oceans Flagship
  • CSIRO Marine and Atmopheric Research Division
  • Marine Biodiversity Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities (CERF) Hub
  • National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis
  • Australian Fisheries Management Authority
  • Department of Environment and Water Resources.

Background

Dr Wilcox joined CSIRO from the University of Queensland after a varied career in practical and theoretical ecological research in the United States of America (USA) and Australia.

His research has focussed on the dynamics of declining species populations, including the effects of competition, predation, and habitat fragmentation.

Dr Wilcox has mentored several young scientists and taught computational statistics, field methods, insect taxonomy and ecological theory.

He participates in various professional activities, ranging from serving as a journal editor and reviewer to representational roles international resource-management negotiations.

Academic qualifications

Dr Wilcox completed a Bachelor of Science in Ecology with Honours at the University of Kansas, USA, and a Master of Science in Ecology and Conservation Biology at the University of California, Davis, USA.

His Doctorate in Conservation Biology is from the University of California, Santa Cruz, USA, and explored the conservation of endangered systems, using modelling and empirical investigations to assess the dynamics of species and their threats.
