Mr Craig Roy: Deputy Chief Executive, Science, Strategy and People
As CSIRO Deputy Chief Executive, Science Strategy and People, Mr Craig Roy is responsible for a range of enterprise wide activities including strategy, science investment and prioritisation, human resources, health, safety and sustainability and enterprise planning and performance.

Mr Roy's strategic role includes ensuring the delivery of national and global impact from the National Research Flagships program, maintaining CSIRO's science excellence and global standing, and the evolution of CSIRO as an innovation organisation.
Current activities
Mr Mr Craig Roy is the Deputy Chief Executive, Science, Strategy and People. In this role, he provides executive leadership and strategic oversight of enterprise activities, including:
- development and implementation of CSIRO Strategy
- ensuring the standing, excellence and relevance of CSIRO science
- governance and operation of the National Research Flagships program to ensure delivery of planned impact
- strategic investment in science and delivery
- measurement, evaluation and reporting against organisational goals.
- science leadership and outreach programs.
- business improvement initiatives for major projects and organisational change
- human resources operations, workplace relations, leadership and organisational development.
- health, safety and sustainability, striving for zero harm, a healthy workforce and environmental sustainability.
Background
Mr Roy joined CSIRO in October 2003 as inaugural Director of the Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship.
During the four years under his leadership, the Flagship grew from a concept to a high impact research portfolio that delivered across a number of fields including oceans, climate, marine industries such as offshore oil and gas, and environmental stewardship.
He joined the CSIRO Executive Team in 2007 to lead and direct CSIRO's Strategic Change Programs, and subsequently assumed the role of Executive Director, Human Resources, Safety and Sustainability.
He was appointed to his current role as Deputy Chief Executive in July 2010. Prior to joining CSIRO, Mr Roy had a successful career with the Royal Australian Navy spanning two decades.
He served in a number of roles over this period concluding his military career as the Navy's Director, Oceanography and Meteorology and concurrently as Director, Australian Oceanographic Data Centre.
During his various roles, he has operated very effectively at the national and international level on science and technology matters.
Academic qualifications
Mr Roy undertook his Science degree (Mathematics) at the University of New South Wales, completed a Masters degree in Business Administration at Macquarie Graduate School of Management, and was awarded a Masters degree in Science (Oceanography and Underwater Acoustics) at Royal Roads Military College, Canada.
Mr Roy was awarded the Gold Medal of the Governor General of Canada (University medal) for his academic performance during his Master of Science program.
Mr Roy also qualified as a meteorologist through the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Columbia University Senior Executive Program.
