Dr Graham Bonnett is researching sugarcane to help breed better sugarcane varieties with increased sucrose.
Current activities
Dr Bonnett leads the Plant Fibre and Biofactories for new Agricultural and Industrial Products Theme.
His research interests are in understanding the ecology and reproductive biology of sugarcane in order to identify and manage potential risks of genetically modified sugarcane.
He is also involved in research to understand how sucrose is accumulated to high levels and exploiting genetic variation to increase the levels of sucrose in sugarcane cultivars.
Background
Dr Bonnett comes from an agricultural background in England.
He studied agricultural science with an emphasis on crops.
After completing his Doctorate he continued to work on plant storage carbohydrates at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
He joined CSIRO in 1993 where he has worked in:
Since 1995 Dr Bonnett has studied many aspects of sugarcane physiology and sugar production and strives to get the results of his research utilised by industry.
