Dr Ivan Cole is a Chief Research Scientist for CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering Division (CMSE).
Dr Cole combines broad experience in the areas of research management and planning with a detailed knowledge of materials science and mathematical modelling.
His expertise spans the manufacturing and infrastructure and aerospace sectors.
Background
Dr Cole joined CSIRO in 1991 as a Research Scientist.
He led a team researching corrosion science and surface design for 12 years prior to taking on the positions of Science Director and Research Portfolio Manager at what was then CSIRO Manufacturing and Materials Technology Division (CMMT).
This Division, CMMT, merged with CSIRO Industrial Physics in 2007 to create CMSE.
Dr Cole was appointed CMSE Deputy Chief, Science in 2007. He fulfilled this role until 2010 and is now a Chief Research Scientist at CMSE.
During his career Dr Cole has been involved in numerous international research programs and has worked in:

- Sweden.
Academic qualifications
Dr Cole has been awarded a:
- Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physics and Physical Metallurgy in 1981 from The University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
- Doctor of Philosophy in 1986 from Monash University, Victoria, Australia.
Dr Coles doctorate was awarded for his research into Thermal fatigue of steels in cases of localized heating.
