Dr James Bradfield Moody: Executive Director, Development

With a background in strategic management and global partnerships, Dr James Bradfield Moody drives international development for CSIRO.

Current activities

Dr James Bradfield Moody is CSIRO’s Executive Director, Development, responsible for CSIRO’s future development pipeline.

In this role he connects CSIRO with Australian and international government and industry partners. 

This role combines Dr Moody’s love for science with his experience in innovation and passion for the future.

Background

Dr Moody sits on a number of advisory boards, such as the Advisory Board of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the Advisory Council of the Australian Bureau of Statistics. He is also a board member of the Brisbane Institute in Queensland. 

Dr Moody was formerly the Managing Director of Natural Resource Intelligence (NRI), which provided environmental, social and economic intelligence to assist organisations in monitoring and evaluating land and natural resources to meet their business and environmental objectives.

Prior to NRI, Dr Moody was Chief Systems Engineer for FedSat, the first Australian Satellite to be launched in thirty years. Funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems, this satellite is hoped to be a catalyst for Australia's re-entry into the space arena and to pave the way for future endeavours.

He joined CSIRO in December 2004 as Director, Divisional Business Strategy for CSIRO Land and Water, responsible for developing new business opportunities and improving business practices. 

Dr Moody was a member and executive secretary of the taskforce on Science and Technology for the Millennium Development Goals and was invited to attend the World Economic Forum as a Global Leader of Tomorrow in 2003.

Academic qualifications

Dr Moody has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Information Technology from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Queensland
  • Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering, also from the Queensland University of Technology
  • Doctorate from the National Graduate School of Management, Australian National University, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.


For his doctoral work he undertook research on the application to the international and Australian satellite industries of Complex Product Systems - that is, high-cost, complicated systems which embody a large number of customised, interacting sub-assemblies and components.

Achievements

Dr Moody has been heavily involved with the United Nations, representing youth and the space generation, and from 2000-02 was co-facilitator and Australian representative of the 40-strong youth advisory council to the UN Environment Program (UNEP).

He was also a founder and co-chair of the Space Generation Advisory Council in support of the UN Program on Space Applications and a member of the Science and Technology delegation to the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.

Dr Moody was a member and executive secretary of the taskforce on Science and Technology for the Millennium Development Goals and was invited to attend the World Economic Forum as a Global Leader of Tomorrow in 2003.

In January 2005, Dr Moody took part in the Forum of Young Global Leaders, where leaders in politics, business, society, learning, arts and culture from each of the seven geographic regions of the world were invited to participate in the World Economic Forum and work on issues of international significance.
