Dr Jianyao Chen: researching hydrological processes and groundwater dynamics

Dr Jianyo Chen is researching physical, chemical and microbiological aspects of hydrological process under environmental change and urbanization, focusing on groundwater dynamics by using isotopes.

  • 30 August 2010 | Updated 14 October 2011

Current activities

Dr Jianyao Chen is a Research Scientist in the Groundwater Hydrology research group of CSIRO Land and Water.

His current activities include:

  • geochemistry/groundwater dynamics in the Great Artesian Basin
  • basin scale hydrological processes in Humid Area (Southern China)
  • groundwater simulation in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area project.

Background

Dr Chen has over 20 years of research experience in a broad range of issues relating to agriculture water use, soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC), application of Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing in hydrological modelling, nitrate pollution in groundwater.

Dr Chen has over 20 years of research experience in a broad range of issues.

Before joining CSIRO in August 2009, Dr Chen was a Professor in the School of Geography and Planning, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou.

He had international working experiences with the Institute of Geography-Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Beijing, and the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (Kyoto, Japan).

Dr Chen has been principal investigator for more than 10 projects, including:

  • Global Water System Hotspots in the Asian Region: Mega cities and Dams, 2nd GWSP-Asia Network Meeting, Funded by APN (Asia Pacific Network for global change research), 2006–07
  • Sino-Japan research cooperation in the water use and change in the lower reach of the Yellow River, funded by Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Japan, 2003–08
  • Change of groundwater flow and mass transfer in the landfill area, funded by Ministry of Education of China, 2006–07
  • Hydro-environmental responses to urbanization in the subtropical and tropical zone – a case study in Zhuhai, funded by Natural Science Foundation of China, 2006–08
  •  Mechanism in change of water quality and policy for water-related pollution control in Dongguan, funded by Bureau of Science and Technology of Dongguan city, 2008.

His main research interests are groundwater dynamics and relevant paleo environmental change in large aquifers, and hydrological processes related to the groundwater and surface interaction by using geochemical and model approaches.

Academic qualifications

Dr Chen has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Science, Nanjing University, China, 1987
  • Master of Science, CAS, China, 1990
  • Master of Science, ITC, University of Twente, The Netherlands, 1995
  • Doctor of Philosophy, CAS, 2000
  • Doctor of Philosophy, Chiba University, Japan, 2003.

Achievements

Dr Chen has:

  • over 60 peer-reviewed journal papers
  • two Doctoral and seven Masters students graduated under his supervision

He is a:

  • Member of Editorial board for the journal: Isotopes in Environmental and Health Studies (International SCI journal), and Progress in Geography (Chinese)
  • Member of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS)
  • General secretary for Chinese National Committee of Global Water System Project (GWSP)
