Dr Joanne Vanderzalm: researching water recycling via aquifers

Dr Joanne Vanderzalm is assessing the biogeochemical processes induced during water reclamation and reuse via Managed Aquifer Recharge.

Current activities

Dr Joanne Vanderzalm is a Research Scientist in the Water Use and Reuse research group, which is part of the Urban and Industrial Water research program.

Research topics of special interest have included:

  • impact of stormwater recycling on the water quality in Blue Lake
  • reclaimed water Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR)
  • arsenic mobility during Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR)
  • aquifer treatment processes
  • environmental tracers to assess reaction processes.

Background

Prior to joining CSIRO in 2003, Dr Vanderzalm had several years experience in industrial and environmental chemistry.

Academic qualifications

Dr Joanne Vanderzalm is a Research Scientist in the Water Use and Reuse research group.

Dr Vanderzalm has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Chemistry) from Monash University, Victoria, Australia, in 1995
  • Master of Applied Science (Chemistry) from Monash University in 1999
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Geochemistry) from Flinders University, South Australia in 2004.

Achievements

Dr Vanderzalm is the author of seven journal articles, 22 reports, three book chapters and 27 conference papers.

Dr Vanderzalm has contributed to two team awards:

  • CSIRO Land and Water Teamwork Award in 2005
  • CSIRO Land and Water Service from Science Award in 2008.

Professional activities

Dr Vanderzalm is a member of the International Association of Geochemistry and the Australian Water Association.
