Dr Jorgen Frederiksen: researching atmospheric dynamics, predictability and climate

Dr Jorgen Frederiksen is a dynamic meteorologist who works on critical problems that are barriers to improvement in weather and climate prediction and climate change prognosis.

Background

Dr Jorgen Frederiksen joined CSIRO in 1974 as a Research Scientist, rising to the classification of Chief Research Scientist in 1996.

He has researched the following topics:

  • dynamical theories of atmospheric processes including storm tracks, blocking, teleconnection patterns, intraseasonal oscillations, monsoon disturbances and equatorial waves
  • weather prediction and seasonal climate prediction
  • regime transitions in complex systems like the atmosphere and coupled ocean atmosphere system
  • statistical theories of climate states and coherent atmospheric modes
  • closure theories of turbulence interacting with large scale flows, Rossby waves and topography
  • developing parameterisations of small scale dynamical processes that improve simulations of atmospheric and oceanic circulations and climate
  • determining the causes of Australian climate change during the 20th century and the likely projected changes in future.

Current activities

Dr Frederiksen's work contributes to the Australian Climate Change Science Program (ACCSP), to the Indian Ocean Climate Initiative (IOCI), to the Climate Adaptation Flagship and to the Australian Community Climate and Earth-System Simulator (ACCESS) Project.

Dr Frederiksen is internationally recognised for his expertise in atmospheric research.

Dr Frederiksen is:

  • Chair of the Australian Academy of Science Sectional Committee on Earth and Planetary Science for the election of new Fellows
  • a Foundation Member of the Australian Research Council Complex Open Systems Network
  • a Visiting Fellow at Australian National University.

Academic qualifications

Dr Frederiksen holds the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Physics from University of Adelaide, South Australia, 1968
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours 1) in Mathematical Physics from University of Adelaide, 1969
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Theoretical Physics from Australian National University, 1972
  • Doctor of Science in Atmospheric Physics from University of Adelaide, 1988.

Achievements

Dr Frederiksen is internationally recognised for his expertise in atmospheric research and has authored more than 100 journal and book chapter publications and a similar number of conference and technical papers.

He served as Associate Editor for the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society from 1987-92 and as a Board Member of the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences from 1997-2002.

He was an Honorary Research Associate at Monash University, Australia, from 1995-2000 and a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University since 2003.

Dr Frederiksen has received a number of honours and awards including:

  • Crafoord Fellowship, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 1983
  • CSIRO David Rivett Medal, 1984
  • Fellow of Australian Institute of Physics, 1987.

In 2005 Dr Frederiksen was made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
