Dr Lyn Hinds is researching benign, novel biotechnological approaches for fertility control of vertebrate pests.

Current activities

Dr Hind’s current research focuses on management of vertebrate pests, including development of benign, novel biotechnological approaches for fertility control and containment; both nationally and internationally, and reproductive physiology of Australian marsupials.

She is also interested in environmental sustainability and biodiversity within complex landscapes such as the agricultural and pastoral zones in Australia and Asia.

In 2005, Dr Hinds, who is a Senior Principal Research Scientist leading the Vertebrate Pests group.

Dr Hind's research includes reproductive physiology, biology and the management of problem species, from marsupials to rodents.

Her studies include the following areas:

• development of oral delivery mechanisms for marsupials that have ruminant-like digestive systems using the tammar wallaby Macropus eugenii as the experimental model
• ecologically-based methods for management of rodents
• mechanisms that regulate reproduction.

Her work on the development of oral delivery systems is part of the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).

Dr Hind’s has spent most of her research career with CSIRO, where she gained an international reputation. Her professional history includes:

Academic qualifications

Dr Hinds was awarded her Bachelor of Science with Honours from the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Australia, in 1976.

In 1984, she gained her Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology from the ANU with a thesis on progesterone and prolactin in marsupial reproduction.

Achievements

Dr Hinds received the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales Whitley Award (1998) for Best Multiple Authored Work for the publication Marsupial Biology: Recent Research, New Perspectives.

In 2002, she was a member of the CSIRO Rodent Research Group which received the inaugural CSIRO Partnership Excellence Award.

Dr Hinds is a member of the following scientific and advisory committees:
