Current activities

Dr Lane leads the Social and Economic Sciences Program with CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems.

The Social and Economic Sciences Program is one of the world’s largest groups of social scientists working on natural resource management issues.

Dr Lane also leads the natural resources planning and management group with CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems.

Dr Lane's team has skills in:

  • natural resource planning and plan evaluation
  • community engagement
  • environmental policy and governance
  • environmental management systems
  • environmental and social impact assessment
  • indigenous lands management.

Dr Lane currently leads projects that:

  • seek to develop improved integrated planning systems for natural resource management
  • analyse institutional arrangements
  • seek to improve levels of institutional integration and performance in resource management
  • investigate the social and environmental trajectories of the developing countries in the Pacific region.

Background

Prior to joining CSIRO in 2007, Dr Lane was Associate Professor and Head of the Discipline of Geography and Environmental studies at The University of Adelaide, Australia.

He was previously Assistant Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States of America (USA).

Academic qualifications

Dr Lane has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies at Griffith University, Australia in 1989
  • First Class Honours in Environmental Planning from the same institution in 1991
  • Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from the same university in 1994
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Geography from the University of Queensland, Australia in 1997.

Achievements

Dr Lane has published more than 50 refereed journal papers and authored or edited eight books and monographs.

Dr Lane researches environmental management and planning across Australia and the Pacific.

He has been awarded more than 30 research grants and 40 consultancies.

He has worked in all Australian states and territories, as well as:

  • the USA
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • China
  • South Africa
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Fiji
  • Solomon Islands
  • Vanuatu.

Dr Lane serves on the National Committee for Geography (Australian Academy of Sciences).
