Current activities

Dr Neville Crossman is a Senior Research Scientist leading and conducting multidisciplinary research at the Waite Research Institute in Urrbrae, Adelaide, South Australia.

His work aims to integrate biophysical and socio-economic data and models in a spatial analysis environment to better inform Natural Resource Management (NRM) policy and planning, given the complexity of climate change.

Dr Crossman's research projects include:

  • integrating pattern and process for predicting spatial distribution of exotic and native plants under climate change
  • reconfiguration of irrigation landscapes for multiple environmental and economic benefits
  • threats, opportunities and hotspots for carbon sequestration in South Australia
  • optimal landscape design and trade-offs for NRM policy and planning.

Background

Dr Crossman joined CSIRO in 2005 as a Research Scientist.

Dr Crossman aims to integrate biophysical and socio-economic data and models to better inform policy and planning.

Between 2003 and 2005 he was employed in a post-doctoral research position at the University of Adelaide, where he investigated systematic approaches to landscape restoration and marine conservation planning.

From 2000 to 2003 he lectured, tutored and researched across the diverse topics of water resource management, invasive species ecology, human populations and demography, biodiversity conservation and sustainability at Flinders University.

Academic qualifications

Dr Crossman has been awarded a:

  • Bachelor of Arts (Geography Major), Flinders University, 1998
  • Bachelor of Environmental Management (First Class Honours), Flinders University, 1999
  • Doctor of Philosophy, Flinders University, 2004

Dr Crossman's thesis topic was 'Modelling the distribution and spread of the invasive European Olive (Olea europaea L.) in South Australia.'

Achievements

Dr Crossman has received the:

  • CSIRO Strategic Excellence Award for Partnership Excellence, 2007
  • CSIRO Land and Water Strategic Excellence Award for Partnership Excellence, 2007.

He has been presented with the following awards and prizes:

  • Spatial Sciences Institute SA Spatial R&D Award, 2005
  • Royal Geographical Society of South Australia John Lewis Silver Medal, 2005
  • United States National Science Foundation Travel Award, 2003
  • Council of Australian Weed Science Societies Young Weed Scientist Award, 2003
  • Flinders University Research Travel Award, 2003
  • Gerald McCalden Award in recognition of excellence in innovative research in urban and regional information systems, 2002
  • Flinders University Chancellor’s letter of commendation, 2000
  • ESRI Australia GIS Prize, 1997.
