Current activities

Dr Oswald Marinoni is based at CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences in a research team that provides government and industry with techniques for:

  • economic evaluation
  • investment appraisal
  • decision making.

He undertakes research into the development and application of investment decision support systems with special emphasis on the uncertainty of input values. His research aims to provide solutions to support optimal and sustainable natural resource management.

Dr Marinoni is also involved in research to provide geographic information systems (GIS) interfaces which help visualize the impacts of various resource management scenarios and enhance the understanding of spatial decision problems.

These interdisciplinary tasks generally require collaboration with scientists from other disciplines such as:

  • mathematics
  • economics
  • geosciences
  • systems modelling.

Background

Dr Marinoni has developed a number of multi criteria and spatial decision support tools which have been applied in a variety of research projects within Germany, Spain and Brazil.

He specialises in three-dimensional (3D) visualisation and the integration of 3D information in spatial decision support systems.

He has more than ten years experience in the geostatistical modelling of data and has taught at the universities of Darmstadt and Berlin in Germany.

Academic qualifications

Dr Marinoni studied geology at the Universities of Mainz, Germany, and the Berlin University of Technology (TU) also in Germany, where he specialized in Engineering Geology and graduated in 1994.

He was then appointed Research Associate for the Chair of Engineering Geology at the TU Berlin.

In 2000, he was awarded a Doctoral degree of natural sciences (passed with distinction) for his geostatistical research in the central area of Berlin.

Sustainable management of natural resources needs management solutions which are comprehensive and understandable for all stakeholders involved.

Achievements

While working for private companies, Dr Marinoni has undertaken consultancies on:

  • risk assessment in former mining areas
  • design of GIS databases
  • various projects in the field of geotechnics and engineering geology.

During his academic career he has delivered and participated in a variety of projects focussing on:

  • GIS
  • spatial decision support
  • land use planning
  • geostatistics.
