Dr Peter McCabe is a Theme Leader with CSIRO Petroleum and has research interests in petroleum systems and assessment of frontier basins.
Current activities
Dr McCabe is Leader for CSIRO’s Maximising Australia’s Petroleum Self Sufficiency Theme.
The theme encompasses exploration and appraisal of oil and gas resources. It also conducts research into oil and gas field development and processing of hydrocarbons.

Background
Dr McCabe joined CSIRO in April 2007. He has spent over 30 years in geologic research related to fossil fuels in academia, industry and government.
He has studied hydrocarbon-bearing strata in:
-
Europe
-
North and South America
-
South-East Asia
-
Australia.
He is internationally recognised as an expert in clastic sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy and fossil fuel resource assessment.
While a Postdoctoral Fellow at McMaster University in Canada and an Assistant Professor at The University of Nebraska, in the United States (USA), he studied fluvial strata in the Maritime Provinces of eastern Canada.
At Exxon Production Research Company in Houston, USA, Dr McCabe studied the sedimentology and stratigraphy coal-bearing strata in the Appalachian region of the USA and oil-bearing strata in the Llanos basin of Colombia, South America.
Dr McCabe is internationally recognised as an expert in fossil fuel resource assessment.
From 1983-87 he was Manager of Coal Geology at the Alberta Research Council in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and directed a major assessment of the province’s coal resources and conducted research on the Cretaceous strata of western Canada.
Dr McCabe subsequently spent 20 years at the US Geological Survey (USGS) in Denver, Colorado, USA, where he directed a project to study Cretaceous strata of the western USA.
He also worked on the USGS assessments of world petroleum resources, in particular on South-East Asia and Australasia. In addition, he conducted a study of major oil and gas-bearing deltaic systems of the world.
Academic qualifications
Dr McCabe was awarded a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in geology from the University of Hull, United Kingdom (UK) in 1971.
He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Geology from the University of Keele, UK, in 1975. His thesis was on the sedimentology and stratigraphy of Carboniferous deltaic strata in northern England.
Achievements
Dr McCabe's most recent achievement was being named the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Distinguished Lecturer for the Asia Pacific region for 2007-08.
Dr McCabe has given many talks on the remaining world oil and natural gas resources to diverse audiences including auto manufacturers, investment bankers and power companies.
In 2006 he was a guest speaker at the World Economic Forum meeting in New York City, NY, USA.
He is also:
-
a recipient of the Wallace E Pratt Memorial Award for best paper in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, with Dr John W Robinson, 1999
-
a Past President of Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), an international organisation with about 4 000 members, 2002-03
-
currently President-elect of the American Geological Institute (AGI), a federation of 44 professional organisations representing over 100 000 geologists, which plays a major role in increasing communication between geoscientists and promotes increased public awareness of the vital role that geosciences play in society’s use of resources and interaction with the environment
-
a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, UK.
His other memberships include:
-
Geological Society of Australia
-
Geological Society of America
-
American Association of Petroleum Geologists
-
SEPM Society for Sedimentary Geology
-
Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia
-
International Association of Sedimentologists
-
International Association for Energy Economics
