Dr Sébastien Lamontagne: determining water requirements for riverine ecosystems

Dr Sébastien Lamontagne’s primary research areas include groundwater hydrology, environmental tracers and biogeochemistry.

Current activities

Dr Sébastien Lamontagne’s primary research areas include groundwater hydrology, environmental tracers and biogeochemistry, with the general aim to understand how water regime changes impact on river and wetland ecosystems.

Dr Lamontagne leads two multidisciplinary projects within the Regional Water and the Healthy Water Ecosystem themes of the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship.

He co-leads the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth (CLLAMMecology) research program, a multi-institutional research effort to understand the environmental water requirements of the Coorong, one of the most important estuarine ecosystems in Australia.

He also leads a project quantifying recharge rates in losing streams in the New South Wales Murray-Darling Basin, Australia.

Research topics of special interest have included:

  • impact of salinisation on semi-arid floodplains
  • environmental water requirements for groundwater-dependent ecosystems
  • groundwater – surface water interactions.

Background

Dr Lamontagne joined CSIRO in 2000 after completing his studies and a postdoctoral fellowship overseas.
